What I learned about marketing from a dumpster company

I recently repaired my deck so I had a bunch of old wooden boards I needed to get rid of.

I noticed someone on my street had a dumpster in their driveway. It had a big phone number on the side so I called it.

The person answered, explained how it worked, and we agreed on a price. They would drop it off the next day and come back to pick it up in a week. Easy.

There’s a few lessons here.

First, I didn’t follow the typical “customer journey.” I didn’t Google “dumpster rentals near me,” look up reviews, or even visit their website. I just saw their number, picked up the phone, and called.

Second, they answered the phone and made it easy to hire them. It sounds simple but so many service businesses mess this up. As my friend Uriah Guilford says, the first therapist to respond usually gets the client
