You’re not allowed to complain about not getting something you didn’t ask for

You’re not allowed to complain about not getting something you didn’t ask for.

This is marriage advice I picked up from working at the Gottman Institute. More on that here

This is also marketing advice.

In an ideal world, you would do good therapy and clients would find you. But that’s not how it works.

You need to ask for what you need.

That could mean reaching out to other therapists and asking them for referrals. But make sure you’re returning the favor and making referrals to them, too.

It could mean raising your rates and asking clients for more money. No one is going to pay you more money unless you ask them to.

It could mean asking colleagues to leave you a positive review on Google. This is one you actually shouldn’t ask your clients to do.

Something else I learned working at the Gottman Institute is “no is always an acceptable answer.”

Just ask.
